Meet the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan

At a glance, the 2016 and 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan models look nearly identical, but there are a few important differences. There are a few new names in the trim lineup, including the Wolfsburg and Sport. While the names of these trims are new, the configurations themselves are not, as they replace the 2016 Tiguan R-Line and SE, respectively. There are also slight changes to what is included in those renamed trims.

The Wolfsburg has a panoramic sunroof, along with custom badging and its own floor mats, neither of which the Tiguan R-Line had prior. Because the Sport trim gives you a sport suspension, this configuration lives up to its name. It also provides comfort via automatic climate control. There are even exterior upgrades of body-color side sill trim and 18-inch gray alloy wheels.

Volkswagen History: The Tiguan

The 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan was based on the automaker's small car platform, featuring European styling and a turbocharged engine with 200 horsepower and excellent gas mileage. It came with front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive, and a 6-speed automatic with a manual available on the base trim. With the rear seats folded, this first Tiguan had 6 cubic feet for cargo and included adaptive front lighting.

Following its debut model year, the 2010 Tiguan only saw minor changes such as new xenon headlights, white backlighting on the instrument panel, and a small facelift.  Hill hold and an electric parking brake were added in 2013 with the R-Line arriving the following year. In 2014, VW Car-Net connected services came as standard on the SE trim and higher, giving drivers a vehicle health report, remote vehicle access, enhanced smartphone connectivity, and more. This is also when the Fender Premium Audio system became available.

For 2015, Volkswagen updated the infotainment system across the Tiguan lineup. This included giving the SUV a nicer touchscreen and making a backup camera standard. In 2016, Volkswagen managed to drop the price significantly while still adding standard features like heated seats, keyless entry, push-button start, V-Tex leatherette upholstery, and the MIB II infotainment system.
