Get Compact Fun with the Volkswagen Jetta

The Volkswagen Jetta is a popular option among people who want a compact sedan with premium features while sticking to their budget. The Jetta has some styling elements of larger Volkswagen models, as well as a surprisingly spacious interior with room to stretch out while maintaining the compact footprint that makes it so maneuverable. There are various trim levels for drivers to choose from, along with multiple engines so that the Jetta can do exactly what you want. Going with one of the more recent model years will give you some of the latest class-leading technologies.

Updates That You Will Love on the 2017 VW Jetta

The 2017 Volkswagen Jetta is incredibly similar to the previous model year, with only a few minor changes. The biggest difference that you will notice between the 2016 and 2017 Jetta is the streamlined trim levels with four options, as the diesel and hybrid are not available this year. Even so, four trims is a competitive number of configurations that should offer an option for everyone.

In addition to the streamlined trim levels, you will notice that the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta has a small increase in price, along with more standard features on nearly every trim level. Newly standard features that come on the entry-level 2017 Jetta S include a backup camera, as well as LED running lights and 16-inch steel wheels. The SE now includes VW Car-Net App Connect, a sunroof, leatherette upholstery, and blind spot monitoring along with rear cross-traffic alerts.

People interested in the Jetta SEL will notice newly standard features as well, including automatic climate control, adaptive cruise control, a power driver's seat, and forward collision warning that features automatic braking. Finally, the Jetta GLI now only has the SE trim rather than both the SE and SEL like it did in 2016. However, the 2017 Jetta GLI does have more standard features, including blind spot monitoring, parking assist, power for the driver's seat, and navigation.

Get to Know the Volkswagen Jetta History

The Volkswagen Jetta made its debut during the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1979 and arrived as a 1980 model. It was first offered in two trims as a four-door sedan or two-door coupe. Drivers could enjoy a 50-horsepower diesel engine or a 74-horsepower 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine. The vast majority of the Jetta's underpinnings were borrowed directly from the Golf, although it was larger and had a more polished interior with higher-quality materials.

North America got the second-generation Jetta in 1985, which boasted smoother edges, an angled hood, and a squared-off rear deck. Not surprising, this generation represented a larger sedan with more power as well. This was partly due to the new Jetta GLI with 90 horsepower. It also came with unique features like an enhanced instrument cluster and leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The third generation of the VW Jetta arrived in 1993, as just the four-door sedan, and with an upgraded suspension. For 1994, standard features expanded to include cruise control, air conditioning, power locks and windows, power steering, and power brakes. Then in 2001, VW offered a Jetta station wagon with 52 cubic feet of cargo room behind the first row and two trims, although it did not last very long. The fifth generation appeared in 2005 with a mid-cycle refresh for 2008.
